As
with any surgery, the single most important factor
in the success of cosmetic surgery is the surgeon
you select. Do not take this responsibility lightly.
Conduct your own research to verify your surgeon's
training and experience; then weigh your decision
carefully. Your
cosmetic surgeon should be certified by the American
Board of Plastic Surgery. Don't be confused by other
official sounding boards and certifications. The
American Board of Plastic Surgery is the only board
recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties
(ABMS) and certified in the plastic surgery specialty.
There is no separate ABMs certified board for cosmetic
surgery. In
most states, it is legal for any physician who holds
a medical license, with our without surgical training,
to advertise as a plastic or cosmetic surgeon. That's
why understanding board certification is so important
to the prospective patient.
Check for your surgeon's membership in the
American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons
(ASPRS) and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic
Surgery (ASAPS) After
you have checked the credentials of your surgeon,
make an appointment with him for an initial consultation.
The doctor should be willing to give you options
and discuss his design recommendations with you.
A good cosmetic surgeon wants to be sure that he
can improve your appearance considerably and that
you are realistic about the results that can be
achieved.
